Volcanoes

Did you know a volcanic eruption can demolish an entire town? A volcano is a hill or mountain formed by lava or a hole in the ground that lava flows through.
Volcanoes are formed by magma that comes up from deep in the Earth and mixes with gas. Then, the magma goes through a vent and the magma flows down the mountain. As it cools the lava hardens into rock and the rock piles up into a hill or mountain.
In 1880, Mt. Saint Helens caused one of the most devastating volcanic eruption in U.S. history. Mt. Saint Helens is a tall mountain south of Seattle. Mt. Saint Helens was formed by a volcanic eruption. Mt. Saint Helens is right above a subduction zone. A subduction zone is when one of Earth’s plates pushes another plate into the magma. This causes a volcanic eruption. Also, the eruption caused 57 deaths. In the past 4,500 years Mt. Saint Helens has erupted several times.
Therefore, volcanoes are beautiful, powerful forces of nature.
